A standard drink sounds like a fixed quantity and is not. Countries define it at different amounts of pure alcohol, and the differences follow from how each system was designed to be used.
A standard drink measures alcohol, not liquid
The unit refers to the mass of pure ethanol in a serving, not to the volume of the drink or the size of the glass.
This is necessary because a small measure of spirit and a large glass of beer can contain the same amount of alcohol.
The calculation is volume multiplied by strength, converted to grams using the density of ethanol.
Everything else in the system, including serving sizes and guidance limits, is derived from that single figure.
Countries picked different gram values
Definitions in use around the world range roughly from eight grams of ethanol to about fourteen, with several values in between.
Each was chosen to correspond to a typical local serving at the time the system was created, which differed by drinking culture.
Once published, a value is difficult to change, because guidance, labelling and research data all accumulate around it.
The result is that the same drink counts as one unit in one country and nearly two in another.
Serving sizes were the anchor
Systems were designed so that a common local pour would come out at roughly one unit, making mental arithmetic unnecessary.
Where beer is normally served in large glasses, the unit had to be either larger or accepted as multiple units per glass.
Where spirits are sold in fixed small measures, aligning the unit to that measure was the obvious choice.
The anchoring worked when serving sizes were stable, and has weakened as glass sizes and product strengths have both drifted upward.
Strength drift broke the original assumptions
Typical wine strength has risen over recent decades, so a glass of the same size now carries more alcohol than the systems assumed.
Beer has diverged in both directions, with strong craft styles well above the assumed level and low-alcohol products well below it.
Restaurant and bar glassware has also grown, particularly for wine, which compounds the effect.
A pour that was designed to equal one unit can now easily equal two, which is invisible to the drinker relying on the count.
Guidance is expressed in different periods too
Some countries publish weekly limits, others daily, and some publish both with separate figures for occasions.
Weekly framing acknowledges that consumption is uneven across a week, while daily framing is easier to apply to a single evening.
Comparing guidance across countries therefore requires converting both the unit size and the period, which is rarely done in reporting.
Two countries can appear to have very different advice while recommending almost identical amounts once converted.
Why labelling makes this harder than it should be
Labels usually state alcohol by volume as a percentage and container volume separately, leaving the unit calculation to the drinker.
Some jurisdictions require the number of standard drinks to be printed, which removes the arithmetic entirely.
Where that is not required, a shared bottle makes the calculation harder still, since the pour size is unknown.
The gap between what is printed and what a drinker would need to know is the main practical weakness of the whole system.
Research uses grams for a reason
Studies of alcohol consumption generally report intake in grams of ethanol rather than in standard drinks.
This makes findings comparable across countries whose units differ, and avoids embedding a national definition into the data.
When such findings are reported publicly they are usually converted back into local drinks, which introduces the conversion error again.
Reading the gram figure directly is the only way to compare two studies conducted in different countries without distortion.
What the unit system can and cannot do
The system works well as a counting tool, allowing a person to track intake across different drink types with one number.
It does not account for the rate of drinking, body size, or whether food was eaten, all of which affect how alcohol is processed.
Nor does it distinguish between the same total spread across a week and the same total in one evening, which are different in every respect that matters.
Its value is as an accounting unit, and treating it as a measure of effect rather than of quantity is where most misreading of the guidance begins.
