Vintage charts exist because some regions produce a noticeably different wine each year and others do not. The difference comes down to how close a region sits to the edge of ripening.

Ripening is a race against the season

Grapes accumulate sugar and lose acidity as they ripen, while tannins and aroma compounds develop on their own slower schedule.

Both processes need heat and time. A region that supplies plenty of both will finish the job in almost any year.

A cool region supplies barely enough. The season ends when temperatures fall, whether or not the grapes have finished.

That is what makes a climate marginal: the outcome depends on how the particular year behaved rather than on the average.

Small temperature differences have large effects at the margin

A warm region running a degree or two above or below its average still ripens everything. The wines differ in style but not in success.

A marginal region with the same deviation may gain or lose several days of effective ripening at the end of the season.

Those days matter disproportionately, because the final stage is when tannins soften and aromatics develop.

The result is that identical weather variation produces mild differences in one place and dramatic ones in another.

Rain at the wrong moment is the other variable

Rain during flowering disrupts fruit set, reducing the crop and producing uneven berries that ripen at different rates.

Rain near harvest swells the berries with water, diluting sugar and flavour, and raises the risk of rot in tightly packed bunches.

Rain in the middle of the season is usually welcome, relieving drought stress at a point where the vine can use it.

Timing therefore matters more than total rainfall, which is why annual averages tell you almost nothing about a vintage.

Growers respond, which narrows the gap

A difficult year is not simply accepted. Growers thin the crop, adjust canopy management to expose fruit to more sun, and pick selectively.

Sorting at the winery removes underripe and damaged fruit, at the cost of yield. A severe sort can reduce the usable crop substantially.

Blending components can be declassified, with the weakest lots sold under a secondary label rather than included in the main wine.

These measures mean modern difficult vintages are far better than they once were, though they raise the cost per bottle considerably.

Cellar techniques change what a vintage can become

Fermentation temperature, extraction time and the choice of oak all shift depending on what the fruit arrived as.

A lighter year is often handled gently, with shorter maceration and less new oak, because the fruit cannot support heavy treatment.

A dense year takes more extraction and more oak without losing its shape, which is part of why such wines age longer.

Decisions of this kind are why two producers in the same village can present the same weather very differently.

Warm regions vary in style rather than in quality

Where ripening is assured, the year's variation shows up as differences in alcohol, acidity and fruit character rather than as success or failure.

A hot year in a warm region can actually be the problem, producing high sugar, low acidity and cooked fruit flavours.

Producers there manage heat rather than chase ripeness, picking earlier, using higher-altitude sites and irrigating where it is permitted.

Vintage charts for such regions consequently show a narrow band of scores, which reflects reality rather than a lack of discrimination.

What a vintage chart cannot tell you

Charts average an entire region, and a region can contain sites with quite different exposures, soils and harvest dates.

Hail is the clearest example, since it can destroy one grower's crop and leave a neighbour untouched in the same afternoon.

Producer skill also outweighs vintage more often than the charts imply. A careful grower in a weak year frequently beats a careless one in a strong year.

The chart is most useful as a guide to ageing potential and to price expectations rather than as a verdict on any individual bottle.

Why lighter vintages are worth attention

Wines from cooler years typically carry lower alcohol and higher acidity, which makes them more flexible at the table.

They also mature earlier, so they can be enjoyed while the celebrated vintages are still years away from drinking well.

Prices are lower for the same producer and the same site, which is the clearest case in wine where the second-best year is the better purchase.

The trade-off is a shorter drinking window, so the same bottle that offers value today may be past its best while a stronger vintage is still climbing.
